leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart! And the peace I give
isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or
afraid." John 14:27
"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers. (7) If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7
I remember turning to these verses many times, while facing counseling for a past sexual abuse. God taught me through these verses that I did not have to succumb to the symptoms or feelings of what I was experiencing at the moment because His peace was already available to me and when I just couldn't hang on any longer; I knew that I could ask for His peace and He would come to me and sustain me, through the moments that seemed impossible to get through.
How many times do we try to muddle through a difficult moment on our own? After a while, the only thing that we seem to experience is a feeling of overwhelming agitation. When I talk with people who are overwhelmed by their circumstance, I usually suggest to them; that if they could only exchange the negative feelings for prayer; then this would be a way to connect with God, while disconnecting with the symptoms of the problem.
Many times, we don't experience the true peace that comes from God because our thoughts are deeply embedded with every part of the problem. If we are ever going to experience God's true and lasting peace and if we are ever going to see these moments of agitation leave; then we need to get alone and sit quietly with God and allow His peace to replace these moments that seem so out of control.
