Empty Words - Part One | Devotions to Produce Spiritual Growth
with Diane K Hiltz Chamberlain
Do we realize how our words truly reveal what’s in our hearts? We may try to hide our hearts from the world, by living a life that isn’t real but when we speak; each word will uncover the truth that is hidden within. In Matthew 12:34-35, we read… “You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. (35) The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.”
Our hearts become a warehouse of thoughts and feelings and some of these thoughts and feelings stem from sin, circumstances and good moments in our lives. In a situation, where we store up good things; people cannot help but notice how good our lives are because these feelings will overflow from our heart to theirs, through the words we speak. In the same sense; this can happen, when we are facing a difficult circumstance or sin in our lives because whatever we are living for the moment, will become stored up within our hearts. We may try to conceal what is wrong and keep it hidden from those around us and especially God but our own words will eventually tell the story, of what is going on within us because when these feelings are stored up over a period of time, then they begin to overflow in the words we speak and also through the way we react to a situation.
We need to begin each day, by cleaning out the warehouse of our hearts. We need to make room for the good things that God longs for us to have, so as the warehouse of our heart begins to fill up, then the good thoughts and feelings that we have stored up within us, will overflow and spill into the lives of others.
Pain and heartache has a way of controlling us, to the place where we begin to store up anger, hurt and other negative thoughts and feelings but when we connect to the One, who can bring about a heart of praise and rejoicing, even though we may experience the most difficult times; then the good feelings that we store up within us, will allow us to remain on the pathway that God longs for us to travel on, while others around us experience the true goodness of God also.
Life is never easy but when we begin our day, by storing up the good thoughts and feelings that only come from God, then the storehouse of our hearts will begin to accumulate the good things that will help us to experience God’s best. On the other hand, we need to remember that when we store up a heart that is full of negativity, then we will continue to feel the blunt of our circumstance, while we find it difficult to press on.
What is our hearts revealing today? Are they overflowing with the goodness of God or have we allowed them to overflow, with thoughts and feelings that only cause us to sink deeper into despair? We need to remember that these hearts that God has given us are storehouses and whatever we choose to store within them, will reveal the kind of life we live.
