Focusing on God - Part Two | Devotions to Produce Spiritual Growth

with Diane K Hiltz Chamberlain

Are we listening for the voice of God today or has our day begun, by listening to what our problems are telling us? Is there a clear distinction in our thoughts, between the voice of God and the voice of evil? In Exodus 20:18, it says…”When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance….”

Do we recognize the voice of God in our daily lives? God has many ways of displaying Himself to us but if we are buried within our problems and are not focused on Him, then we are never going to be able to hear, what He is trying to relay to us. I remember a time in my own life, when I was so caught up in my pain and heartache; that I found myself becoming more attentive to those difficult moments and because of this, I never felt the depth of God’s presence in my life. Finally one day, I began to see what I was doing wrong and apologized to God, for the wasted moments that I had spent with my problems, rather than with Him. As my life began anew, His voice became more profound, as I found myself longing for His presence even more, during the difficult moments I faced. In fact, this is how my writing began and while buried beneath a rubble of problems, I quickly discovered a gift that God had for me all along.

God has different ways of speaking to us. Maybe He will allow Himself to be seen in a more profound way, when He is attempting to get our attention or maybe He will speak in a still small voice; in a way that will allow our hearts to connect to His, so we can understand what He desires of us. No matter how He reveals Himself to us, we will never be able to hear His voice, if we allow the clutter in our lives, to have preeminence over Him. In this life, we are going to face moments of pain and heartache but just because these difficult moments enter our lives, that doesn’t mean that we have to allow them to rule our lives. When we can converse with the One who has control over everything in our lives; then we will always hear His voice within our spirit, while we begin to experience a peace within us that can keep us lifted up, even during the deepest darkest moment.
