Last night…after finally drifting off to sleep, I was surprised to wake up in the middle of the night, to pure black darkness. As I looked around me…I noticed that the yard light was off and the fan that I had turned on before going to bed was no longer working. From there, I decided to call the power outage number, to see if an outage had been reported…which it had; so I tried to get back to sleep; but as I laid on the bed…looking out the window, I saw what had actually created the problem…and it was an unexpected wind and rain storm.
This morning, as I was reflecting on what had taken place during the night; God began to lead me to some Bible verses in Mark 4:37-41, and we read… "And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38) And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39) And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40) And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 41) And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"
As I read these verses to myself…God began to show me how our faith can waver, during the unexpected storms of life. Just think…the disciples had followed Jesus for quite some time. They witnessed miracles and other things that should have opened their eyes to who Jesus truly was; but a test of their faith seemed to prove them wrong. Instead of holding tightly to their faith; they let go of their faith, to focus on the storm and where it could possibly take them. In fact…when you think about it…they never really knew the One that they had journeyed with for so long; because of what it says at the end of verse 41, which reads… "What manner of man is this, that even the wind and sea obey him?" Here, the disciples had witnessed the marvelous works of Jesus, as they journeyed with Him; but yet they questioned Him, as to how He could bring that storm to an end.
I just wonder how many times we react in the same way as the disciples, while facing an unexpected storm within our own lives? It seems like when life is calm and the sun is shining, we have no problem holding to the faith we claim to have in Jesus; but what happens when an unexpected storm comes out of nowhere? Where is our faith then?
No matter what we face in life, we need to realize that Jesus will always be there for us, even through an unexpected storm; because you see…Jesus never leaves our side…and no matter how we react to these difficult times…He is there…willing and ready to help us at any time we need Him.
As we close this time together…ask yourself this question…do I truly know Jesus and do I truly know that He will be there for me when I need Him; or is it that I only know of Him. It's good to know of Jesus; but let's face it…it's even better to know Him for who He truly is…because when we do; then there won't be no need to worry when an unexpected storm arrives; because we will have a settled feeling within us…knowing 100% that Jesus already has it under control.
Have a very blessed day…and ALWAYS know that Jesus is there for you!
It's Always & Only Because of Him…
