As I look out my window this morning, I see where the chill in the air has drawn the birds back to the feeders. As branches still remain piled at the back of the yard, from a previous windstorm; the birds have now discovered a place to huddle up and remain warm, until it's time to take another bite from the feeder above them. In fact, this new place where they now reside has become a shelter from the hawks that enter the yard from time to time.
While relaxing in the stillness of this brand-new day, I've also been thinking on how our God can do the same for us…only in a little different way. Just a few moments ago, God began to take me back to a beautiful bible verse in Psalm 91:4 (NIV) that reveals this to us…and we read… "He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart."
How comforting to know that there is a place where we can be safely sheltered from the evil that attempts to harm us; for at a time, when we find ourselves surrounded by evil, we can seek shelter under God's almighty wings of love…where His faithfulness and truth becomes a shield or wall around us…that can keep us safely protected from the evil that is attempting to take us down.
While thinking on this…one of the first thoughts that came to my mind was this; do we really know how to seek shelter under God's almighty wings? I mean, we can talk about this; but how do we actually enter a place, where we can be safely sheltered from what may be attempting to take hold of us?
Quite some time back, I was facing a lot of deep hurt in my life. It seemed like life was so overwhelming at the time; that I began to seek shelter in these broken moments that had now been standing before me. If I was to describe this shelter, I would say that it was in pretty bad shape. The walls were barely standing, and the roof had leaks that only seemed to make it much more difficult to get through the moments that I was already facing. As I cried out to God for help, I began to feel His presence drawing closer to me, even as the storm continued to rage around me. As I looked through the cracks of these broken moments, I began to realize that I had chosen the wrong shelter to take refuge in. In fact, it was the moments that I had become so caught up in; that had put me there. Once I began to see this, I cried out to God once more and began to focus on Him, rather than the storm that had drawn me even more into this broken-down shack of a life. From there, I began to take hold of God's hand and allow Him to draw me closer to His side…and from there, I took shelter under His almighty wings, until the storm had passed by. In other words, it was focusing on Him, while praying and reading His word; that turned me completely around and took me to that shelter of safety that I so needed at the time.
As I watch the birds outside my window this morning, it's as if they really know what can help them from the cold and the predator's that surround them. They are not thinking about whether they should take shelter in the brush pile or not; but rather, they are immediately seeking what can help them stay warm and safe. Can we say that we are doing the same?
As I close this letter to you today, I'm just thinking that there may be some of you, who are going through a very tough time right now. Maybe you feel alone in a storm that just only seems to be worsening with time. Have you ever considered taking shelter in a God who will love and protect you, while safely bringing you through these times? One thing I know…God will cover you with His wings and surround you with His presence…one that can make these times seem so much easier, until the storm has passed…and just think, all you have to do is ask Him to lead you there…it's as simple as that.
I sure hope that this letter of encouragement has brought hope and peace to your heart today…just as it has mine…and that you will carry these thoughts with you throughout your day! May you truly have a very special day! Take care…and don't forget to come back tomorrow, as I will have another letter of encouragement…waiting here just for you!
With love & prayers…
It's Always & Only Because of Him…
